Soxhlet Apparatus

Description

Soxhlet apparatuses are comprised of a condenser, extraction thimble, and a distillation flask or percolator to hold the solvent. To complete the extraction, the sample is loaded into a thimble before being placed into the soxhlet apparatus where the solvent is refluxed until extraction is complete. It was originally designed for the extraction of a lipid from a solid material. Typically, Soxhlet extraction is used when the desired compound has a limited solubility in a solvent, and the impurity is insoluble in that solvent.
